El escritor romano Valerio Máximo en su célebre obra Hechos y Dichos Memorables, II, 6, 11, nos dice que los guerreros cimbrios (originarios de Jutlandia) y los celtas hispanos vivían por y para la lucha:
“saltaban de alegría al partir al combate, pensando abandonar este mundo de una forma feliz y honorable. En cambio, en las enfermedades se lamentaban de verse amenazados por un final miserable y vergonzoso”.
Este espíritu está presente entre los vikingos, para los cuales la muerte por enfermedad, la temible muerte de paja, era el peor de los destinos, prefiriendo quitarse ellos mismo la vida a morir en el lecho.
Añade Valerio Máximo que los cimbrios y los celtas hispanos tenían las mismas canciones de gesta, himnos y danzas de guerra. Es posible que esta semejanza se deba a que los cimbrios, aunque era un pueblo germánico en su origen, por su contacto con los celtas había adquirido parte de su cultura, prueba de ellos son los nombres celtas de sus principales líderes: Boiorix, Lugius, Claodicus y Caesorix.
